The Bicycles Online Company Fitness Challenge: Promoting Health and Team Spirit

Over the last month, Bicycles Online realised that our staff are an extremely active bunch and were going crazy in lockdown. Instead of letting the pent-up energy go to waste, a plan was put into place to get us out of our chairs and do something for the community.

Firstly, they split the company into seven teams, consisting of 4-5 employees. Each team was encouraged to exercise as much as possible (and as safe as possible) within their local lockdown situations. At the end of each week, the times were collated, and as a carrot at the end of the stick, Bicycles Online would donate one thousand dollars to their chosen charity.

The team found unique and interesting ways to exercise, blew the dust off their trainers, swapped their computer mice for dumbbells, and got active. Motivation was high as it wasn't just an opportunity to get fit; it was an opportunity to change other people's lives.

The first week started strong with over seventeen thousand minutes of activity logged by the teams. Team 2 took the win with a mammoth effort of over four thousand minutes logged in seven days. They chose to give their winnings to Shelter for Dogs and Cats Sydney.

 

Although my team ended up being the wooden spoon winners, this challenge has really brought the team closer together virtually and was a great opportunity for everyone to get involved and partake, nothing like a bit of friendly competition either!

 

Week two saw the competition growing and even higher levels of motivation. Banter in company chat groups highlighted the competitive nature between the teams and everyone was out to win. As a whole, the company logged over fifteen thousand minutes of walks, cycling, surfing and kite-surfing. Team 5 narrowly took the lead and donated their winnings to Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.

I think my dog liked this challenge the most, as he managed to get a lot of extra walks. This 'challenge' has been a great way for all of us to 'hang out' digitally, and challenge ourselves to get out of bed early and make a difference each day, a difference to our own lives, and hopefully raise some money and awareness for a good cause. I liked the extra incentive and responsibility to do something different with my day. I had to do a lot of hiking, and not much riding or surfing due to an arm injury, so I need the extra motivation.

 

 

Colleagues started wondering whether Team 2 did any work as they came into week three well ahead of anyone else. Even though team members were spread around the world, teams worked together to smash their goals. Teams started getting a little more creative with their activities. People hit the pump tracks, record their bike park stunts, did more yoga, and even logged some night rides. A total of just under sixteen thousand minutes of exercise was done that week but, somehow, Team 2 steamed ahead in front of their competitors. As they were previous winners, the runners-up took the prize, and Team 7 donated their winnings to Cancer Council NSW.

As week four rolled in we could smell a change in the air, Team 4 came out of the gates fastest, determined to stop Team 2 from taking the next round of the competition. They dug in deep; family dogs got walked more than ever, indoor trainers asked for a reprieve, and the Strava app nearly crashed. Team 4 came out on top in the end with just under three thousand minutes of exercise out of over 14,000 minutes achieved that week. Team 4 donated their winnings to MND Australia.

 

At the end of the month, we saw 64,000 minutes of activities by our colleagues. For reference, that is 44 days, 10 hours and 37 minutes of exercise over the month. A mammoth effort by the team to get fitter and lift company morale in these crazy times. The perfect way to boost company morale, increase positivity and get everyone in a positive mindset. This has been by far the most amount of fun I've had doing a charity event. The team banter and camaraderie inspired me to get out of bed, get on my bike and ride!

It's also been fun seeing all the activities people in the other teams have been doing, from kayak volleyball to kitesurfing to taking their pet chickens out for a walk!

This has been by far one of the best idea Bicycles Online have had since they installed a coffee machine in the break room. Employees are fit, healthy and excited to work after a good time out on the trails, a good surf or spending the afternoon riding with their kids. 

We can't wait to get thinking and include the whole worldwide company network on the next challenge.
