Frame & geometry

The Helios A7X uses Polygon’s full-carbon Helios A frame and fork. It’s the brand’s first road bike with wholly concealed cable routing and aero tube profiles. The truncated airfoil shapes on the down tube, seat tube and seatpost are UCI-legal and reduce drag without resorting to extreme, fragile designs. In the medium size, the head tube angle is a moderate 72.3° paired with a 43 mm fork rake, giving a trail figure of about 65 mm for stable handling. Chainstays measure 415 mm and the wheelbase is slightly longer than some racy competitors, making the A7X more relaxed than edgy race bikes[1]. 


Polygon quotes an unpainted frame weight of 800–900 g, but the real-world weight with hardware is closer to 1,000 g, with the fork adding another 350–400 g. The complete medium-sized bike tips the scales at about 8.1 kg (17.8 lb) with tubes and without pedals[1]. 

Components & build

The Helios A7X’s calling card is Shimano’s 105 R7170 Di2 12-speed electronic shifting. It pairs a compact 50/34 T crank with an 11-34 T cassette, giving a broad range for steep climbs and fast descents. Polygon saves a little cost by using a KMC chain instead of Shimano’s own, but shifting remains crisp. The bottom bracket is a PF86 press-fit, and the proprietary aero seatpost hides the Di2 battery inside[1]. 


A one-piece carbon handlebar and stem from BLKtec keeps cables hidden and weighs around 320 g. While the cockpit looks sleek, there’s no ability to raise or lower the stem without swapping spacers under the bearing, and the 110 mm stem length on medium sizes feels long. Tyre clearance officially fits 700 × 32 mm rubber, though testers squeezed a 34 mm tyre into the fork and still had room out back[1]. 


Wheels are Polygon’s Entity WR5 carbon aero hoops with 50 mm deep rims, a 21 mm internal width and tubeless-ready design. With tape, the wheelset weighs about 1,588 g and is laced with 24 double-butted spokes to Novatec sealed hubs. Polygon ships the bike with Schwalbe One 28 mm tyres (they measure about 30 mm on these rims) and even includes tubeless valves in the box for an easy conversion[1].

Ride impressions

The Helios A7X feels like a race bike, but it’s less twitchy than some high-end aero machines. The moderate head angle and longer chainstays give it a confident, settled feel when you’re in the drops. It accelerates briskly thanks to the stiff carbon frame and deep wheels, yet the handling never feels nervous. Electronic shifting is lightning quick, and the 105 Di2 groupset’s wide-range cassette makes the bike as comfortable on long climbs as it is sprinting for town-limit signs. 


That said, the long reach combined with the 110 mm stem may feel stretched out for riders accustomed to shorter cockpits. And because the integrated handlebar and stem are fixed, adjusting fit means swapping expensive parts. The proprietary seatpost uses an internal wedge clamp that works fine, but if you like to tinker with saddle setback there’s only 20 mm of adjustment. Finally, while the frame hides all cables beautifully, the wide head tube and truncated tube shapes mean this bike won’t be the slipperiest in a wind tunnel[1].

Verdict

For under US$4,000, the Polygon Helios A7X delivers a full carbon aero frameset, deep carbon wheels and Shimano 105 Di2 electronic shifting — a spec list that would cost thousands more from legacy brands. The geometry is more relaxed than some edgy race bikes, making it approachable for riders who want an aero road bike that’s comfortable on long rides. Downsides include the fixed cockpit’s limited adjustability and a fit that runs long, but if you’re comfortable with those traits the A7X is an astonishing value[1].

What makes electronic shifting special?

Shimano’s 105 Di2 system uses electronic servos to move the derailleur, so shifts are instantaneous and precise, and there are no cables to stretch or corrode. Charging the internal battery via a port on the derailleur gives you months of run time between charges.

Is the Helios A7X UCI-legal?

How much tyre clearance does it have?
